It has been a privilege to serve our HHS colleagues for the past five years. In that time, I have relied upon over 30 years of emergency management experience, which includes supporting the U.S. Department of Defense installations at home and abroad in places such as Iraq and Afghanistan. This enables me to develop emergency response plans, training, and exercises needed to ensure the safety of our HHS colleagues.

ALERT HHS Is Here - What You Need to Know

If there is a bomb threat, active shooter, hurricane, or any other building-specific emergency, Alert HHS can notify you by text, email, voice call, and computer pop-up alert - in seconds.


Alert HHS ensures all HHS employees know what to do in emergency situations. Getting urgent alerts is easy:

  1. Update your contact information by visiting the Alert HHS, Get Alerts webpage and select the "Sign Up for Alerts" button.
  2. Download the mobile app by searching "BlackBerry AtHoc" in the App Catalog of your government furnished phone, Apple App Store, or Google Play for your personal phone, enter your HHS email address and use the Organization Code: "AlertHHS".
  3. Receive emergency alerts to be informed and know what to do.

4 Reasons Why You Need to Display Your Identification While at HHS Facilities

Employees often wonder ... why visibly display their HHS identification while in a HHS facility, after having already cleared security? Here are four reasons why:

  1. Helps Facility Security Officers, Federal Protective Services, and Physical Security and Emergency Management staff positively identify personnel in our HHS facilities.
  2. It is required in accordance with the Federal Interagency Security Committee (ISC) guidelines and HHS Facility Security Plans.
  3. Helps differentiate between federal employees, contractors, and visitors to enable security staff to better monitor facility spaces to prevent unauthorized access.
  4. It is a best practice to ensure the safety and security of HHS employees.

Employees should be mindful of who is in our facilities. Comprehensive security is a team effort. Please do your part and display identification at all times while in HHS facilities.

Quick Tips to Resolve PIV Card Issues at the SW Complex

Many employees have reported issues with their Personal Identity Verification (PIV) card access at SW Complex turnstiles and internal-assigned facility spaces. This is likely the result of one of the following issues:

  1. SW Complex expired during COVID-19. Logical access has been extended, but you may no longer have physical access to your facility or office space. The Physical Security and Emergency Management office is maintaining a list of impacted employees. Security Officers are instructed to allow temporary access. Contact the Hubert H. Humphrey (HHH) badging office as soon as possible to schedule an appointment to update your PIV card at (202) 205-5131.
  2. Proximity readers are old and no longer read PIV cards as efficiently as they should. Employees should adjust card positions and distances from the reader for best results. Remember, remove the PIV card from any holders or cases. This may take a few extra seconds, but remember patience is the key! If the problem persists, contact the Physical Security and Emergency Management office at physicalsecurity@hhs.gov to verify if the issue is physical access related.
  3. PIV card issue. The PIV card may be damaged. Contact the Badging Office to determine if a new PIV card is needed at psc_intake@hhs.gov or call (202) 05-5131.
  4. Proximity reader may be defective and require replacement. Report the issue to the Physical Security and Emergency Management Office, Electronic Security Services team at HYPERLINK "mailto:physicalsecurity@hhs.gov" physicalsecurity@hhs.gov or call (833) 621-PSEM (7736).

How to Report an Incident at HHS Facilities

SW Complex:

  1. Report crimes and suspicious activities on or near HHS property first to local responding law enforcement by calling 911. Next contact your respective facility security command center/desk, followed by Federal Protective Services.
  2. If the matter is not of a criminal or suspicious nature; however, still warrants a security report, advise your facility security officers, who will create an incident report. Below are contact numbers for the SW Complex Security Coordination Centers:

    • Wilber J. Cohen Building: (202) 382-7111
    • Thomas P. O'Neil Building: (FOB 8): (202) 225-0911
  3. If warranted or requested, security officers will refer the complainant to Federal Protective Services who will initiate an official police report.
  4. PSC's Physical Security and Emergency Management team can assist with providing contact information for the appropriate security and Federal Protective Services point of contact at your facility, and additional guidance.
  5. As appropriate, report security-related issues to operating division or staff division leadership, so administrative actions can be taken to prevent similar future incidents.
  6. All reports are handled in accordance with privacy act laws and regulations.

5600 Fishers Lane:

  1. Report crimes and suspicious activities on or near HHS property first to local responding law enforcement by calling 911. 5600 Fishers Lane Facility-Specific Security & Notes

  • Many employees' PIV cards expired during coronavirus 2019 (COVID-19) maximum telework. Logical access has been extended, but you may no longer have physical access to the facility or office space. The HHS Physical Security and Emergency Management office is maintaining a list of impacted employees. Security Officers are instructed to allow temporary access. Contact your supporting badging office as soon as possible to update your Personal Identify Verification (PIV) card. If you need additional guidance, contact your operating division security office.
  • Avoid risking damage to your vehicle at one of the two entrance vehicle barriers by remaining at a complete stop until the indicator light turns orange.
  • The 1 West employee entrance is now open. A temperature screening station is implemented at entry. A second screening station is operational on the 5th floor main lobby entrance.
  • The loading dock is operating at full service to receive deliveries.
